Black Elderberry Extract has been used for generations for immune support and overall wellness so when a gummy version was put on the market you know I had to jump on it. Elderberry gummies are so much easy to take than their syrup versions and provide the same benefits.
Packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system.
Twice the natural antioxidant capacity of blueberries.
More than 50% the overall antioxidant capability of cranberries.
Tame inflammation (which I wonder if this does any good for Maverick’s Eczema flares and skin inflammation, we’ll see)
Helps protect your heart
Can ease cold and flu symptoms
This season I’ve partnered with Sombucol – a major brand for Elderberry products – to protect myself and little ones against cold and flu symptoms.
My kids think all gummies are candies, a treat. They get all excited and line up in the kitchen every morning for “gummy time” and have no idea I’m supplying them with vitamins and *gasp* healthy things.

When I first heard of dry shampoo (many years ago before I had kids) the thought of not washing my hair every other day was baffling. I couldn’t wrap my head around why anyone would need this. Fast forward 7 years and I was hooked. The Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste by R+Co is one of the best dry shampoos. ever. Very little goes a long way and the full sized container lasts forever! .
I’ve been using this brand for years now and I don’t see myself switching dry shampoos anytime soon. Bandlands is made with Volcanic Ash which naturally cleanses and balances the scalp and the formula is meant to help keep blowout volume and create texture.
So, you wanna take a trip to Great Wolf Lodge? We just went to the Anaheim, CA location this past weekend and I wanted to share some tips while they’re still fresh in my head. *Please note: all the below information is targeted towards people visiting the Anaheim, CA park. The attractions and descriptions will most likely be different at other locations.
***Also, Please note there are affiliate links in this blog post. If you were to click on any of them and purchase items I will get a small commission at no extra cost to you. This is so I can continue blogging and entertain the internet with my nonsense.
If you’d like live updates on the things I do with the kids,
No.1 The best – and cheapest- time to book a stay at the Great Wolf Lodge is in the fall/winter.
During the summer months, this place get’s packed. SUPER packed… Like, ” We can’t even find a chair to put down our things” packed. With antsy little ones just dying to get into the water I’d rather visit this park when it’s a little slower. By all means, this doesn’t mean the place is empty… in fact the hotel was booked full during our winter break. The difference is in the number of day passes that are sold. Naturally in the warmer months people are visiting Anaheim,CA for Disneyland and other attractions so this place fills up quickly.
Side note & Tip from my 8yo son:
“Taking a trip to Great Wolf Lodge in the winter was pretty cool because snow falls in the lobby.”
No.2 Splurge on your room – Just get the upgraded themed room.
This was a last minute trip for us and we weren’t fully prepared for the cost of our stay which is why we opted for the basic af room. I wish we had just gotten the themed room with the bunk beds and the whole shabang because my kids were looking forward to it. We had shown them photos and videos of Great Wolf Lodge before the trip and the one detail they remembered? The woodsy decor bunk bed.
I didn’t really look this up before our trip so we missed out on pool time the first night we got there. Also, If you want to avoid the crowd (especially if you have younger kids) I advise getting to the pool right when it opens.
No.4 They have a 21+ bar and hot tubin the water park area
I found out about this little perk only AFTER I got back home. . .(story of my life). But if you’re smart you’ll be researching The Great Wolf Lodge BEFORE your visit (I’m assuming that’s why you’re here) and yea, need I say more? Kids are great and all but we all need that hour or two of adult time. Isn’t it great to know that you can grab a drink and chill out in a kid-less hot tub? I posted a Q+A about the Great Wolf Lodge on my IG during my trip and had quite a few people ask me if it would be decent as an adult vacation. My answer is still no, there are better options out there as an adult only group imo but if you’re o.k with the noise and little children running around it could be a decent overnight trip.
No.5 Bring your own robe or towels to the water park
This might not be relevant if you’ve decided to visit Great Wolf Lodge in the summer, but in the winter that walk from the water park, up the elevator and to your room will be cold. Although they provide towels inside of the water park you’ll have to return them before leaving (you check-out the towels with your key-bracelet thing so they’ll know if your towel has gone missing, they’ll probably charge you). If you have younger children definitely bring an extra towel or cover up robe for the walk out of the pool area.
No.6 Pack one of those waterproof phone casepouches
You know, those little plastic pouches for your phone that hang around your neck? Bring it.
No. 7 Don’t valet your car, just park yourself – you’ll want to take a trip out to eat
The main reason I say this is because the food options at this particular Great Wolf Lodge weren’t the best imo. The buffet was $25/adults, $15/kids. I didn’t look at the Fire Grill restaurant menu but I’m assuming you’d be paying a good $15-20 per person. Your other options are pizza, pasta, salad, and Dunkin’ Donuts. For lunch I guess these places were o.k but I wanted to eat something better for dinner. Postmates was my best friend during my visit! The Anaheim/Garden Grove, CA area has great family style restaurants for pretty cheap too…and if you don’t want to pay the delivery fees on your app, you’ll want to take a drive out to eat.
No. 8 There is no convenience store inside
This one is my husbands little addition to the list of tips. He was expecting a Vegas-style convenience store with beers, water and snacks. None to be found in the hotel but there is a 7-11 at walking distance from the park. Buy your waters and snacks before arriving to save time and money.
No.9 There’s a lot more to do at the Great Wolf Lodge than just the water park, these were our favorites.
Additional $ things to do:
MagiQuest , ShadowQuest + CompassQuest
Guests can purchase a wand and complete an interactive mission through the hotel. You don’t have to purchase a new wand every visit either, just bring it back and you’ll only pay for the game itself next time.
We spent a lot of time at the Northern Lights arcade. There was something for every age and they didn’t make it impossible to win prizes. The arcade itself is open 24 hours but you’ll have to fill your Paw Points card with money during redemption hours.
At just $6 per person for a 10 frame game, this is a great a affordable way to spend some time out of the water.
Build-A-Bear is always fun for young kids, but this one is special: They have all the Great Wolf Kids characters available along with accessories and clothes.
Others worth mentioning that we didn’t get a chance to try: Mini Golf and Laser Maze.
Free things to do:
Story Time Character Meet And Greets PJ Party Kids Dance Party
I got a few of questions about where my swimsuit was from, JCrew! They still ave the exact stripe one available and solid colors too. Here are my current swimwear obsessions from JCrew.
Q+A From my Instagram Stories
After posting on my IG about our trip to Great Wolf Lodge I quickly realized that a lot of people had the same questions. Here’s the list.
Do you recommend Great Wolf Lodge for younger kids? (3yo and younger): What’s pretty awesome about Great Wolf Lodge is that there is a designated pool and slide area ( Whooping Hollow and Cub Paw Pool ) for little ones. My 2yo (although more adventurous and thrill seeking than most his age) really enjoyed it. This area is at the deepest area 2 or 2.5ft deep. I still had to watch my younger ones and be at arms length but for the most part they were able to enjoy this area on their own. Now this being said, most of the water park is geared towards 8yo+ to teens and your younger toddler won’t be able to go on some of the slides even at Fort Mackenzie( a four-story ‘treehouse’ with a giant tipping bucket).
Can you bring floaties?:Yes, you can bring your own but if you get into the water park early you can grab the free life vests and floaties. They had all sizes available during our visit, even when the park was pretty full. Also, a couple of people asked me about water shoes and if they were totally necessary, I didn’t mind my kids walking around barefoot, but it does get slippery. They sell water shoes at the hotel for $15.00 but just in case they won’t have the correct sizes in stock I would invest in one before your trip if you’re looking into it.
Is MagiQuest worth it?: I’m not sure how to answer this one really. For our family it was tough because Maxton (8yo) would have been the only one to really play. The game itself is $14.99 and the wand you need to purchase is $23.99. Would my family be able to play in peace with only 1 wand? Hell no. All of the kids would each need their own to avoid a meltdown. If you have older kids who love interactive mission and quest type activities, totally worth it. If you’re like me with young toddlers and 1 kid who would actually play? Not so much.
Would Great Wolf Lodge be fun for teens?: Yes, totally! The extreme water slides are fun for adults and teens. My personal favorite was Howlin’ Tornado. ( you know, the one you see in the commercials? It’s a 6 story funnel you can slide down in a tube with up to 4 people). Again, to avoid lines, get there when the park opens.
Do we pay for ones that are 2yo and under?: Toddlers and infants 2yo and under are free to enter the water park. They do not require a bracelet. BUT they do count as a person for your room. I bring this up because there is a limited number of guests that can stay in one room. For example – if you stay in a room that is allowed 6 people my family would count as 5 (2 adults, 8yo, 3yo, and 2yo) which means we’ll be able to squeeze in one more person, like perhaps my sons friend. Anyone else who wants to join us from around area would have to purchase a day pass.
Do they charge a resort fee?: Yes, $30 per night.
How can we purchase a day pass?: Day passes can only be purchased online and they have a limited number for each day. If you or a friend needs one, buy it as soon as you can especially during the summer months.
Are Pack-And-Plays available? For how much?: Yes, like most hotels you can request a Pack-and-play. There is not additional charge for one. On the day of your arrival you should receive a text from a Great Wolf Lodge “personal assistant”. I reserved one through a text and it was delivered to my room before we got there. You can also check out through text as your leaving which is definitely easier than calling the front desk.
What’s the average price to have a birthday party at the Great Wolf Lodge?:That really depends on the number of guests you have but here is a ball park idea. There is a minimum of 10 guests (3yo -adults) and the price is $55 per person. This price includes 1.5 hours in the party room, 1 pizza pie for every 5 guests, all day water park pass for each guest, and your choice of cake or cupcakes. They also require a 1:4 adult to child ratio (I’m assuming for safety reasons).
How much is it to rent a cabana at the water park?: About $120 on weekdays and $300 on weekends. This includes seating for 6, a flat screen t.v, fridge with non-alcoholic drinks, and towels. This would be great if you were visiting great Wolf Lodge with other families and want to have a space to sit together and take a break from the water.
It’s the 2nd week of November already, it’s basically Christmas! This time of year is a complete chaotic mess for me. Maverick and Maxton both have birthdays during the holiday season in addition to all the usual Holiday things – Shopping for friends, family, and teachers. …Decorating, planning, cooking, and baking. All with a big ass smile on my face whilst my soul feeling like it’s going to implode from stress. I’m going to need an extra 5 Costco size bottles of that eggnog to get me through the next few months with my sanity intact. This blog was originally intended as a simple gift guide for families out there but…. It just got too crazy so I’m simplifying a bit more.
I had my younger kids walk around Target and other stores to see their favs and took a peek at Maxton’s Christmas letter to Santa with his wish list too 🙂

Holiday Gift Ideas For The Kids
Please note: My children are ages 2-8, therefore most of these items will be suited for this age group. I won’t be writing long descriptions for this post, just skim through for ideas and click on any image or title to be sent to either Target or Amazon to purchase.
Note: Melanie (3yo) has one of these in pink and she absolutely adores it! I love how this toy teaches little ones to show a scruffy little rescue some TLC and turn it into a fluffy, cuddly little doll! When we first got this, Melanie wouldn’t let go of her doll for a good week straight – brushing and hugging the toy to pieces. (Price – about $10 at Target)
We just purchased this exact play kitchen last month and LOVE it. Kidkraft has great quality play kitchens, solid wood! I love all of them and would highly recommend any and all. Take a closer look at this model in my IG stories highlights!
Ok, this one is for older kids (or adults) but I know my son (who’s 8) would have no problem learning how to fly a drone tbh. If any of you ever watch him play Minecraft and Lego World – you’ll see why.
I know a lot of moms out there have been eyeing The Nugget play couch. Although it’s beautiful and pretty damn cool, I don’t want to spend $230 for a bunch of cushions. I found this mat on Amazon the other day I thought for my small spaced apartment and the price, it was a decent switch.
Just wanted to start off by saying Thank You to those who have been contacting me the last 3 months or so. I’ve been M.I.A from the internet because I was moving. I had a surprising number of people reaching out to me to see if I was ok. Thank You!
It’s been a hectic past 3 months but I’m back and recharged 🙂
I’ve skipped August and September Products This Mom Loves lists which only means I have even more to share for October. Enjoy!

Once in awhile you’ll bump into a product that’s so necessary and revolutionary that it’s just worth every penny to buy it. This is one of them, guys. If you have kids (or teeth) you need this. For myself personally, I love having the Autobrush V3 for my kids… because let’s be real here – they can’t brush their teeth as clean as you would like alone and you just don’t have the time to do it for them every single night and day. Totally worth the money and they’re cute too! Use code BECAUSEMOMLIFE30 and get 30% off your purchase (valid only on their website) : https://tryautobrush.com/collections/frontpage
If you’re in the market for a great baby crib mattress, look no further. We just received this mattress a few days ago and we absolutely love it. Previous to owning the Simmons Kids SlumberTime Mattress by Delta Children we had a regular mattress with a vinyl cover. Over time the vinyl cover cracked and the insides were coming out. The SlumberTime mattress is made with all non-toxic materials, has a cotton outer lining and is comfortable and safe to sleep on. I’m a little jealous of my toddler!
If you haven’t seen or heard of Autobrush yet, you’re about to get your mind blown.
AutoBrush V3 review
Let me start off by explaining what Autobrush is.
AutoBrush is an electric toothbrush. Redesigned and effective , this is an electric toothbrush you don’t even have to hold up and brush your teeth with. It’s shaped like a mouth guard and you just gently bite down and the device will gently brush your teeth. Sounds amazing right?
Now imagine your kids with this device… YES, no more having to brush for them. No more wondering if they have to brush again. No more having to drag them into the bathroom to brush their teeth, because trust me, they’re gonna love AutoBrush.

AutoBrush Kids V3 Pros & Cons Review
You need your own plug: This product comes with the USB charger, not the actual plug that goes into the wall. You’ll have to borrow the plug from your phone or other devices at home to charge the AutoBrush V3
Here’s a similar plug I found on Amazon that has 2 USB ports so I could charge both of our Autobrushes at the same time and place.
The light doesn’t really do anything: At first glance I really thought the red light from the toothbrush was going to be some kind of super powered sanitizing light lol! The light doesn’t do anything besides look cool which isn’t really a pro or con I guess.
Brushing with AutoBrush is an adjustment: We’ve been using this product for about 4-5 days and the kids are just starting to get used to them. Although they really enjoy brushing, they didn’t quite understand how to get their teeth clean with the mouth guard shaped bristles. Instead of letting the brush work for 1 session (30 seconds) I make them run it twice or 3 times.
The size of the brush really matters: In one of my videos my oldest says”The brush is like hitting the back of my throat”. I didn’t get what he was saying at the time but I quickly realized that the 8+ size AutoBrush was too big for him. His front teeth were not reaching the bristles and therefore were not getting brushed properly. Make sure you check the sizes on the website before purchasing.
The kids finally want to brush their teeth: It’s a struggle to get my kids to the bathroom in the mornings (who am I kidding , at night too) to wash up and brush their teeth. Now they get so excited about it that they’re running into the bathrooms before I am and fighting over the step stool for who can brush first.
It works: Although the 8+ size was too big for my oldest the 3-7 year old size was just perfect for my 3 year old. I’ve been checking Melanie’s teeth after every brush session and I don’t see or feel plaque.
It plays music: The V3 plays a jungle beat that the kids just love! I love how my kids are starting off every morning with a quick brush and a happy dance. It would be great to be able to upload your own music in the future too! (*hint hint* AutoBrush!)
Foaming toothpaste: Have I been living under a rock? Do you guys see foaming toothbrush in the stores? I haven’t. The kids think it’s fun and I just get the feeling a foaming toothpaste would clean better because it would reach more tiny spaces in the mouth. The toothpaste AutoBrush provides is great and most importantly, safe! (non-GMO and fluoride free!)
Once fully charged, it stays charged for good while: Although we’ve only been using AutoBrush for a little less than a week, we haven’t had to charge it yet (yes, right out of the box! – I know it says to charge fully before using but whatever). You can easily tell how much battery life you have left my placing the brush on the charging pad. If all the lights are red, it’s charged. The less lights are on, the more you need to charge.
It’s cleaner and lasts longer: The AutoBrush features silicone mouth guard and bristles which are easier to clean than your traditional nylon bristles. (not to mention softer and probably safer for sensitive gums). Also, I don’t have any science to back this up but the bristles are a rubbery silicone material. It feels similar to the clear silicone used in baby bottle nipples. I’ve accidentally dropped a baby bottle nipple in my sink disposal one time and nothing happened to it. I’m assuming the AutoBrush bristles are just as durable.
So, is it worth the price?
Ok, I’ll do some math and you decide if it’s worth it.
I was spending about $4.00 on a kids toothbrush every month which would come out to about $48 dollar per year. I pay another $4.00 for kids toothpaste every month which is about $48.00.
Total for the year with a regular electric toothbrush and toothpaste? $98 per kid.
The Autobrush V3 Kids Bundle (brush and toothpaste) is $105 I don’t know how long the toothpaste is going to last and maybe the bristles on the AutoBrush won’t hold up for as long I thought.. So, an extra toothpaste is $10 each and the Kids replacement bristles are another $8.
Estimate total for a year with AutoBrush? $133
For an extra $35 / year I can have happy-to-brush-kids and clean teeth. I don’t know about you, but this is totally worth it for me.
But hey! You can pay LESS, read below!
YASSS, don’t you love paying less? AutoBrush was kind enough to offer all of my readers 30% off! Code and link to their website are below!
Hey everyone! Happy July! Here’s another list of products I’m loving this month. I’ll be adding more as the month goes on so check back once in awhile! Please follow my IG @because_mom_life and view my stories for product updates!

Living close to the beach has it’s perks, yes, but it has never occurred to me until we moved here that we would have to carry EVERYTHING. In past years we would sit in a car for an hour or so looking for close parking and just walk straight into the sand with our belongings. This is no more, we tow everything and everyone on our bikes or walk with a wagon for a good 30 minutes before we reach the sea. Having shade once we get to the beach has been a struggle for me (especially if I’m going without the husband). Carry a canopy to the beach? With three kids 7 years and younger?
Oh, no thanks.
This clamp on umbrella is (I think) the best thing I’ve bought for the beach recently. The Versa Brella is Super light-weight and rolls up into a bag with a strap. You can change the angle of the umbrella to block the sun from pretty much any direction. Genius. I haven’t used it at the beach yet (still getting over the fear of taking my crazy kids to the beach by myself) but I’ll update asap.
I’m not linking the actual item I have because I don’t see it on Amazon… Photo of the actual tea I have here:
I received this set as a birthday gift yesterday and I’m dying to try it asap… I’m just having a hard time getting over the fact that I’ll have to rip open the pretty packaging (anyone else out there like this?) Personally, I can’t wait to try the Mermaid Tea which is Spiruline Marine flavor that has a pineapple / butterfly pea / moringa flavor. This one has a really pretty mermaid blue color to it.
Ok, So I get sucked into online fads once in awhile but I’m so glad I got sucked into this one. These cups are SO pretty… I just can’t. If you didn’t know already these cups are limited edition and sold out in all stores. If you want to get your hands on one you’ll have to pay the inflated price online… which is what I did… Because it’s my mo’f’in birthday and I can.
I’m linking the product into Amazon here but honestly you’ll find much better prices on eBay for this one. Tip: Try to find a seller who has sold more than one of this product and has a few reviews for this particular item already… because I can only imagine the number of people who might be selling fake cups on a platform like eBay. The seller I purchased from also bundled the marble hot cups into the order and I paid a total of $80 for all 5 of the color changing cold cups and 5 marble hot cups. Although this was the cheapest price I found for this product… Don’t tell my husband I spent $80 on plastic cups… thanks.
This product isn’t new what-so-ever but it’s something I’ve been using for YEARS. This is the only lip balm I’ve ever used to the end. The absolute end…as in I take a small brush and dig out the product from the base. This balm is my daily must have item and it’s perfect for daily use when I don’t feel like putting on lip stick. The sweet violet color is the only one I like and I feel it goes with pretty much any skin tone.
Koreans? Making Churros? When I saw these at the Korean supermarket, I’ll be honest I was a bit skeptical because I just love Churros… You guys, They nailed it. These are amazing. Chunchy, cinnamon sugary, little sticks of joy. I’m pretty sure they’ll be cheaper at your local Korean market but I’m linking them to Amazon so you can take a closer look. Make sure you purchase the brand name “CROWN”. Knowing Korean brands there will be a few other companies trying to make a similar product right down to the packaging to attract customers.
Ok, If you like pork rinds, you need this in your life. It will change you, I promise. I’ve gotten 3 people on Amazon subscription to this product just this past week.
My husband and I discovered this these pork rinds at the DOLLAR STORE. Yep… The 99 Cents Only store to be exact. These aren’t in the usual chip aisle so you’ll have to search for them. I thought a dollar for 1 bag was a good deal – it’s so much cheaper on Amazon! If you’re hesitant about buying a whole pack of 18 just try your local 99 Cents Only Store. If you like pork rinds I promise you’ll love these.
Imagine this: You have a microwave popcorn bag. You microwave it for a couple of minutes and when you rip open your bag there are hot, crackling and popping pork rinds. My life is complete ya’ll.
Happy June everyone! It’s that time again. I’m starting my list of products I’ve discovered or loving this month. I’ll be featuring these products in more detail throughout the month of June so please follow! @because_mom_life

I actually purchased the kids version of these at Target the other week and my kids LOVE them. My oldest always reminds me to grab them for him every morning! What I found interesting is that each bite (or serving) has less sugar than many of the gummy varieties of vitamins I took a look at the store that day. Kids love these, we don’t forget to eat them and they taste good!
A dear friend of mine has been raving about this product for awhile now and I’ve been fortunate enough to try it out (again) on our recent trip to Palm Springs. Yes, It was as good as I remember it to be! It’s a scub peel that exfoliates like CRAZY. I didn’t even know I had so much dead skin on my face before I used this stuff.
Directions: Use on a dry face and lightly scrub your skin. You’ll start to see literal chunks of dead skin come off your face (SO gross but amazing and oh so satisfying at the same time!) Wash off with warm water and gentle, I repeat: GENTLE face wash. It’s a peel; Don’t use it with other exfoliants. Skip sunbathing and other harsh chemicals on the skin for a couple of days afterwards. I’ve only tried this a few times but I would advise using this peel face wash once every 1-2 weeks.
Kristen Ess The One Signature Shampoo & Conditioner
I’m not adding any links to purchase this product because the Kristen Ess products sold on Amazon seem to have some bad reviews (possibly a counterfeit/expired item)? Besides, it’s half price at Target – $10.00 each! Smells amazing + feels amazing. I’ll update my review after a few weeks.
I have this product linked to Amazon just in case someone wanted more detailed info on it. If you do plan on purchasing, go straight to Trader Joe’s! A close friend of mine came over with a tin of this stuff and I instantly fell in l o v e.
Straight out of the tin this tea smells like watermelon bubblegum. You get a taste of mint on your first sip that gradually turns into a watermelon bubble gum-ish after taste. I’ve been brewing the Mint Watermelon Tea and mixing in Milo’s No Calorie Famous Sweet Tea and a handful of ice every afternoon and it’s life changing. (Milo’s sweet tea is available in SoCal at Walmart and Sam’s Club if anyone is interested.
I know this product looks really random on this list but, just listen. I’ve been using this stuff I can’t even believe how much smoother my hair looks in just a couple of uses. I’m dedicating an entire blog to this within the week so stay tuned!
TBH, It’s a pain in the butt having to apply lotion on my youngest as much as I do. Just how often you ask? Just today I’ve applied a 3 step regimen 3 times. It’s only 1:35PM. You know what’s a bigger pain in the butt? When you do all the “right” things and the Eczema is in the best case: the same, or in the worst case – cracked, bleeding, raw, and still itchy in the worst way. I guess if all these lotions, creams or ointments were solving the issue, all this stickiness would be worth while. (YES, I’ve tried natural remedies. Essential oils, diet change, getting rid of chemical detergents, etc etc and other holistic remedies) …. but rn, it’s not working.
In fact, even food triggers and allergens are a question mark. Example: We tried a piece of boiled egg one time and within 20-30 minutes Maverick broke out into hives on his chest, thighs and face. Since I only gave him 1 ingredient (egg) I was so sure this was the cause (because there’s egg in practically everything, right?) A week or two later my husband decided to try giving him a piece of fried egg and no reactions at all. So I tried another boiled egg a few days later and again no reaction! This isn’t the case for just eggs. It’s pretty much everything we own, everything Maverick touches, eats or is around. One day it’s the cause of a flare and another day it has zero effect on his eczema. Now we’re at a point where sometimes egg is ok, sometimes it’s not. Is our 18 mo starting to develop an immunity to things? Or it this life just playing with us?
I hate this game.
I’m frustrated, yes, and I’m tired asf. On bad days Maverick will wake up 2-3 times throughout the night screaming in pain, itching and tensely squirming his tired little body while I frantically spray water on him, change his diaper, and reapply ointments. This lack of sleep tends to leave me to be a shell of a woman the next day while his temper tantrums are at level 150 ALL DAY. It’s witching hour in my house 24/7 lately!
But I remain focused
I force myself to snap out of my funk because
1) I can’t be having a more difficult time than the actual person who has Eczema, right?
2) I have 2 other humans and a dog that rely on me to function. This might possibly be that “mom strength” that people talk about….Or it could just my level of caffeine intake. Whatever it is, Thank God for it.
When Maverick is going through an Eczema flare it starts off on his chest. I’ll see him tugging at his shirt around the neckline. This single sign is a guarantee that’ll I won’t be sleeping well that night. He rubs his face and eyes, a lot like when he’s tired. Light red patches will pop up around his eyes, chest, sides, shoulders, forearms and thighs. This quickly intensifies and wakes up his “trouble spots”. ( I don’t know the actual term for this, that’s just what I call them). These spots are thick and dry patches that never really go away. For Maverick these are behind the neck, on the elbows, hands, knees, and the worst spot: his ankles and tops of his feet.
Cover it up
It doesn’t matter if my 18mo is going through a flare or has pristine skin that day, he needs to stay covered up. Long footed onesies are our current go-to outfit.
The moment I open his onesie to change a diaper, he’s back at it again! Scratching… more like clawing as his ankles and thighs. Yes, I’ve tried socks… all kinds of lengths and materials. He always pulls them off and goes back to scratching.
We don’t wear shoes in our house
This makes it difficult to have Maverick dressed in a footed PJs all day. As a walking (running and climbing) toddler he wants to walk himself outside to the car, at the park, at the supermarket, etc… Every time I need to get out of the house I have to change his outfit: from footed PJs to socks/pants/shirt. With this outfit change, he inevitably he pulls off his shoes and socks in the car or stroller and goes back to scratching away at his ankles and feet like a maniac. When we get back home from our outing, Maverick is left with raw ankles and feet so I change him back into his footed PJs with some lotion or ointment.
My Solution? Flip-Over Cuff Pants
Flip over cuffs are not a new idea what-so-ever. You’ll see it most often on baby onesies, but with gloves. My thought process: At home I’ll have the foot cuff covering his feet and I can just flip them open when we go out. Hopefully, he won’t be able to pull up his cuff pants (even when they are open) to scratch himself.
I decided this was a decent alternative to changing outfits 2-3 times a day and started my google search:
“flip over cuff pants”
“Eczema clothing cuffed pants”
“flip cuff baby pants”
“flip over foot cuff”
Nothing. It didn’t exsist.
Typically, a 2 year old doesn’t need covered hands or feet so I guess this was to be expected. Well… I did find a few options for sizes Newborn – 9 month. This wasn’t much help as Maverick is already 18 months old and is wearing 24 month sized clothing.
Fun Fact I found while searching: Did you know Aloe and moisturizer infused Eczema clothing exists? If you can afford 65$ for just the top and another 70$ for the bottoms of what looks like a 2 set PJ, by all means try it out.
Absolutely. Brilliant. This was it! Something simple, something that would work for the time being. Only problem: I can’t sew.
This left me to do the most obvious thing I could do – I called my mom who just happens to be a professional tailor on the other side of the country. I sent her photos of what I wanted, a yard of fabric from Walmart, and 7 pairs of toddler pants from Amazon.
Here’s the result
My mom is amazing. Here’s a video of the unboxing and a closer look at the pants.
She was able to make cuffs for 6 pairs of pants with the 1 yard of fabric.
She even pleated little ‘corners’ so Maverick’s heel would fit right in.
They work. Maverick is not scratching his ankles while they are covered which buys us a little time to heal the skin.
Another reason they work: At home we have his feet covered. When we go out I just flip the cuffs open and put on socks and shoes. I don’t know why but he doesn’t seem to try and scratch his ankles in the car anymore. Maybe his mind tricks him into thinking he still has a footed PJ on? Who cares, it’s working for now.
They’re a bit long. We have 1 pair that is shorter than the rest and that’s the 1 I’m using now. The rest of them are long enough to fit my 3 yo so… We’ll have to wait. I feel like my mom did this on purpose so we would be able to use the pants longer? I can’t complain, she spent her free time doing this for me.
My mom left the original cuff on the pants. Visually, they look nice but the pants feel a little too tight when the cuffs are open. (Too much fabric around the ankles).
They might get slippery. Usually, footed PJs have that rubbery fabric on the bottom for some traction but we don’t have that. Maverick hasn’t had an accident yet but I feel like I’ll have to add something soon.
It’s a work-in-progress
We definitely have a few things to tweak but I feel like we’re on the right track. Our end result is in no way perfect or complete but I hope this post can reach someone and it can spark an idea for you. Stay strong Eczema fam! Sending you guys much love and strength.
